My Manifesto

The Howard Smith Wharves are a place that helps define Brisbane’s History, but they are a forgotten place.  My aim with this project is to reignite the area while still remaining respectful to the historical buildings on site.

My concept comes from the concept of my folie, which was the idea of hope, as embodied by the site from the wharves themselves which were built through an employment initiative toward the end of the Great Depression, to the air-raid shelters which represent hope during impending invasion and even to the recent floods. 

I have further distilled this concept and arrived at the idea of community, which came together and found hope in each other to overcome past hurdles.  This proposal is about harnessing that idea of community and openness while creating a space which is accessible and useful.

In order t achieve this I have outlined the following aspects which the proposal will address:

·         Respect to the Historical Buildings

·         Open and accessible (engage the community, bring the community together)

·         include elements of the folie

·         Integrate with the site but do not disrupt it (respect the history)

·         Engage the community across different levels

·         Maximise the use of natural light where appropriate.

·         Use of basic materials in a sculptural way

·         Influenced by the site but set apart from it.
